Application Development Specialist

An exciting opportunity for a full time Application Development Specialist has opened at FRX Polymers at our Chelmsford, Massachusetts facility.  FRX Polymers is commercializing polyphosphonate polymers and reactive oligomers as flame retardant additives for thermoplastic and thermoset applications and is looking for an ideal candidate to join our collaborative team. 

Reporting to the Director Applications Technology, the Application Development Specialist position involves development of new processes and formulations containing FRX Polymers’ flame retardants for applications in thermoplastics such as polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), thermoplastic copolyester elastomers (TPEE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This includes the melt processing of thermoplastic materials and optimizing the product formulations to achieve the desired performance of polymeric systems. Excellent analytical skills are required to problem solve and provide improved flame retardancy solutions to our customers. 

Key objectives:

Product and Process Development: Generate ideas to help solve customer challenges that can be tested in-house or at customer sites. Design, set up and execute experiments at lab scale. Develop and optimize compounding and molding processes for a variety of plastics using strong skills in plastic processing and material properties.  Keep detailed records of experiments, conduct data analysis, and write reports.

Material Property Characterization: Analysis and characterization using techniques including mechanical testing, DSC, TGA, IR, GPC, rheology, and flame retardancy tests. 

Lab Management and Maintenance: Maintain and operate polymer processing equipment such as twin-screw extruder and injection molding machine as well as testing equipment. Provide/coordinate maintenance, modification, troubleshooting and equipment repair to ensure all in working order. Comply with Environment, Health and Safety regulations and with the Quality Management System

Customer Support: Interact with customers and provide assistance for trouble shooting. Attend customer trials to give hands on support.

Intellectual Property (IP) Creation. Develop new intellectual property. Draft invention disclosures for any new and potentially patentable innovations. Support prosecution of patent applications, prior art searches, and competitive assessments.

Work according the Company ISO9001 quality policy and objectives.

Qualifications and competences:

Bachelor’s degree (10+ years of related experience), Master’s degree (5+ years of related experience), or Ph.D degree in Polymer Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science with strong expertise in thermoplastic formulation and plastic processing. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to quickly assess nature, scope and strategies for developing new programs or trouble-shooting. Ability to provide detailed reports of obtained results with scientific analysis and recommendations for continuing research. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.  Team player that knows how to work independently.  Curious, eager to learn, self-driven, results-oriented, hand-on and mechanically inclined.

Senior Financial Analyst

An exciting opportunity for a full time Senior Financial Analyst  has opened at FRX Polymers at our facility in Chelmsford, MA.  FRX Polymers is commercializing polyphosphonate homopolymers and copolymers as flame retardant additives for plastics and is looking for an ideal candidate to join our collaborative team.  The position performs analysis of various financial aspects of the Company, preparation of management reports and participation in the budgeting and forecast process.


  • Quickly understand financial data and develop models in Excel to report, analyze and interpret and the information that draws a concise and logical conclusion
  • Construct dashboards and reporting tools utilizing SQL, Tableau, and Excel and be able to communicate recommendations effectively
  • Assist in the monthly and quarterly financial results packages and presentations in an automated fashion using Management Reporter and Budget Maestro
  • Assist in annual budgeting and periodic forecasting with the ability to develop and populate forecasting models in Budget Maestro
  • Must have experience and understanding of financial modeling including Balance Sheet, P&L and cashflow 
  • Must have the ability to take a hands on approach to using the Company software applications such as the ERP (GP), Management Reporter, Budget Maestro and SQL reporting tools
  • Experience collaborating with IT on solutions and familiarity with database structures for instance, relational databases, data modelling, MS Access, SQL or other database reporting tools
  • Ad-hoc financial performance analysis
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with knowledge of Statutory accounting principles and manufacturing accounting.
  • Must have extremely strong MS Excel skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a challenging fast paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Maturity, professionalism, and high level of discretion are required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA preferable
  • 7+ years accounting and financial planning, analysis and reporting experience
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, and Word
  • Expertise with financial modelling, balance sheet and cash flow budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience working directly with senior management
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills a must, with extreme attention to detail, accuracy and accountability
  • Energy and passion for delivering results in a fast-paced, start-up environment
